Erik Riedel, PhD (he/him) works on data center sustainability & open hardware as Chief Engineering Officer for Flax Computing, seeking to reduce the carbon footprint of data centers worldwide. He previously led engineering for ITRenew’s circular data center initiatives, including the Sesame product line (acquired by Iron Mountain). Erik has over 20 years experience designing & building scale-out computing technology and teams. Erik has built and led teams that created several market-leading, hyper-scale, clustered storage and compute platforms at EMC and then Dell. Before that, he innovated & incubated with teams at Seagate Research and Hewlett-Packard Labs. Erik holds Computer Engineering, Software Engineering, and Computer Science degrees from Carnegie Mellon University. Erik is a former SNIA Technical Council member and organizer of the Object Storage (OSD) and Green Technical Working Groups, as well as a long-time participant in open source Linux efforts in storage and scalable systems.
